Horizons for Euphonium and Trombone Choir
"Horizons" began its life as a work written for my friend Tom McNair, who would later become my brother-in-law. Originally published under the title "Postcards" in 2004, the work is constructed as two vignettes, one slow and sentimental, the second vibrant and a little menacing. After the original publisher dissolved I rediscovered the piece and decided to revise it a bit. The most dramatic change is represented by the ending of the second movement, which I altered from quiet and ambiguous to a roaring climax. The change in title was suggested by the beauty and unpredictability of the weather in the Tampa Bay region, where Tom and I first met and worked together. In a flash, a placid sunset can become a fury of lightning and thunder. The title of the opening movement, Largo, is a play on words; it refers to the slow tempo, but also a beach town near Tampa where I used to spend time marveling at the sunsets over the gulf.
