Sequels for Flute and Harp
Sequels for Flute and Harp
“Sequels” is adapted from a piece called “Round Trip,” which I wrote in 2022 for alto saxophone and marimba. The musical material begins as a simple harmonic outline, then swells into increasingly more complex dialogue between the instruments. As the melodic lines are passed back and forth, they incorporate new elements, although the harmonic structure remains consistent. The idea came from the so-called global conveyor belt, a worldwide network of currents that cycle all of the earths’s ocean water over a 1,600-year period. This cycle, both constant and ever-changing, maintains climate stability and ensures adequate food supplies for migratory animals around the globe.
